Each of the 32 Nato member countries \u2013 including Britain<\/a> \u2013 must prepare for a war on a scale \u2018our grandparents and great-grandparents \u200bendured\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nato chief \u200cMark Rutte today urged allies to step up their defence efforts<\/a> to prevent a war waged by Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a speech in Berlin, he said too many allies do not feel the \u200burgency of the \u200dthreat in Europe and that \u200bthey must rapidly increase defence spending and production to prevent a war on the scale of that \u200dseen by \u200dpast generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We are Russia\u2019s next target. I fear that too many are quietly complacent,\u2019 he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Too many don\u2019t feel the urgency. And too many believe \u2060that time is on our side. It is not. The time for action \u2060is now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Conflict is at our door. Russia has brought war back to Europe. And we must be prepared.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was only last month that General Sir Richard Barrons warned that the UK needs to be ready for a long war<\/a> \u2013 but with the speed of production<\/a>, \u2018at best, we will be quite ready in about 10 years\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever since the end of the Cold War,the government has not invested in the \u2018things it needs for a long war,<\/a>\u2019 instead leaving them to \u2018wither\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ex-commander of the Joint Forces warned that UK institutions are still operating on the complacent peacetime assumption<\/a> that protracted wars do not happen anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid Rutte\u2019s warning for a looming war, another \u2018Coalition of the Willing\u2019 call is set to begin this afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volodymyr Zelensky is due to hold urgent talks with leaders and officials from about 30 countries that support Ukraine\u2019s efforts to end the full-scale invasion on somewhat of fair terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaders of Germany, Britain and France are among those expected to take part in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian president indicated the talks were hastily arranged to avoid getting boxed in by Donald Trump, whose relationship with Russia is only flourishing in recent weeks amid his support for Putin\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on X, he said: \u2018We continue to communicate with all our partners on a daily basis, virtually 24\/7, to identify doable and realistic steps to bring the war to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Everything must be reliable and dignified for Ukraine.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
