Today, it is increasingly seen as a geopolitical trap. Following glaring failures by Moscow to protect its historical ally, Yerevan is making a decisive and perilous pivot towards the West, prompting a furious, calculated backlash from the Kremlin.

A shattered illusion of security

The 102nd Russian military base in the city of Gyumri was long considered the bedrock of Armenian defence. In reality, it has functioned as an instrument of hybrid control. Historically, this military footprint – deeply embedded within Armenia’s air defence and border control infrastructure – allowed Moscow to dictate Yerevan’s defence planning and veto any attempts to forge alternative alliances.

The turning point arrived during the devastating Karabakh wars of 2020 and 2023. The total inaction of the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) shattered the deeply ingrained myth of Russia as a reliable protector. It became starkly apparent to Armenian leadership that the Kremlin was actively exploiting the country’s vulnerabilities to appease other regional powers, notably Azerbaijan and Turkey. In a move that would have been unthinkable a decade ago, a disillusioned Yerevan froze its CSTO membership and began actively looking to the West for salvation.

Pivoting to Paris, Washington, and Brussels

Rather than capitulating to Russian pressure, Armenia is rapidly overhauling its armed forces. This is not merely a change in hardware, but a fundamental shift away from antiquated Soviet military doctrines.

France has emerged as a crucial partner in this transition. Recent landmark contracts for state-of-the-art GM200 radars, Mistral anti-aircraft systems, and Bastion armoured vehicles are laying the groundwork for a modern, highly mobile military force. Meanwhile, military ties with the United States are deepening; the joint “Eagle Partner” exercises in August 2025 were a clear signal of Armenia’s intent to boost interoperability with NATO standards and adopt Western command structures.

The European Union has also stepped into the breach, providing vital institutional backing. In July 2024, an injection of €10 million from the European Peace Facility helped strengthen Armenia’s logistical resilience, demonstrating a long-term European commitment to stabilising the South Caucasus. Emboldened by this support, Yerevan is now gradually reclaiming sovereign control over its border checkpoints with Turkey and Iran.

The Kremlin’s desperate backlash

Moscow has not taken this geopolitical realignment lightly. Viewing Armenia’s burgeoning independence as a direct threat to its traditional hegemony in the South Caucasus, the Kremlin is desperate to sever Yerevan’s growing ties with NATO and the EU.

Unable to offer genuine security guarantees, Russia has instead unleashed a fierce information war. State-controlled media, officials, and pro-Kremlin military bloggers are orchestrating a coordinated campaign to discredit Western aid. A particular focus of this propaganda is to brand Western weaponry as ineffective for the region, a transparent attempt by Moscow to keep the Armenian military technologically tethered to outdated Russian standards.

A point of no return

On the streets of Armenia, patience has evaporated. Sociological data points to a collapse in trust towards Russia and a surging public demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops.

This societal anger is deeply rooted in unresolved grievances. High-profile crimes committed by Russian soldiers in Gyumri, particularly the horrific murder of the Avetisyan family in 2015, acted as a catalyst for public outrage. Decades of perceived arrogance and cover-ups by Russian commanders have fuelled mass protests and irreversibly damaged Moscow’s standing among ordinary Armenians.

As Armenia navigates this fraught transition, Western powers face a critical test. Military hardware alone will not suffice. Robust political backing is essential to shield the country from Moscow’s inevitable economic and energy blackmail. Ultimately, successfully integrating Yerevan into Western security frameworks offers a rare opportunity to loosen the Kremlin’s grip on the South Caucasus, paving the way for a more stable and democratic region.

By Steven Blatter 10/06/2026 For decades, the presence of Russian troops on Armenian soil was viewed as a cast-iron guarantee…

[29

post-3658","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-europe
["GET
