Rather, it represents a deeply pragmatic investment in global economic stability and Euro-Atlantic security. Relying on the assumption that Russia’s ballistic campaign will simply fizzle out without a decisive counter-response is a dangerous illusion – one that will only inflate the ultimate cost of security for the democratic world.

Moscow’s ballistic terror and the threat of flattening major cities remain the Kremlin’s last strategic advantage. Depriving Russia of this primary tool of coercion is a critical political lever, one that would force the regime to abandon its illusions of military dictate and enter genuine negotiations based on international law.

A Hard-Nosed Investment in Continental Security

Crucially, Ukrainian forces are managing elite Western resources with meticulous efficiency:

Expensive Patriot PAC-3 interceptors are never wasted on cheap drones.

Ukraine actively deploys more affordable alternatives to neutralise cruise missiles and UAVs.

Scarce, high-end anti-ballistic missiles are requested exclusively to counter ballistic threats that no other air defence systems can stop.

Every single interceptor launched over Kyiv or Kharkiv directly diminishes the Kremlin’s offensive arsenal. Because international sanctions on microchips and components have severely restricted Russia’s capacity to manufacture Iskander and Kinzhal ballistic complexes, each successful interception effectively neutralises a long-term threat to European capitals like Berlin, Warsaw, or Bucharest. Military aid delivered through mechanisms like NATO’s PURL on a paid basis – funded by partner contributions – remains a highly efficient way for the West to erode Russia’s capacity for protracted aggression.

The Economic Calculus of Prevention

For Western Europe, financing the acquisition and transfer of interceptors like the SAMP/T system is quite simply the most cost-effective way to guarantee long-term security. For nations such as Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands, it offers a concrete opportunity to halt Russian expansionism and prevent direct military confrontations in the future.

This pragmatic calculus is particularly sharp for Germany. Should Russian ballistic strikes completely shatter Ukrainian cities, it will inevitably trigger a massive new wave of refugees heading West. The financial burden of supporting hundreds of thousands of displaced people would vastly exceed the cost of supplying available missiles to Ukraine today. Therefore, for Berlin, investing in Ukraine’s air defence is less about pure solidarity and more about avoiding severe domestic socio-economic disruptions.

As a leading economic power and initiator of the ”Needed Action Air Defence” coalition, Germany bears a unique responsibility. Berlin’s leadership must evolve beyond political rhetoric into expanding joint European production of missile systems. It is this deep industrial cooperation that will secure Europe’s long-term resilience and reduce its reliance on external suppliers.

Buying Crucial Time for NATO’s Eastern Flank

For front-line NATO states like Poland and Romania, non-intercepted Russian ballistics flying over Western, Central, or Southern Ukraine pose an immediate physical threat to their own airspace and critical infrastructure. Frequent border violations and debris from fallen Russian missiles and drones on European soil prove that these weapons possess no “safe” trajectories.

A collapse of the Ukrainian sky due to a critical shortage of interceptors would instantly transform the border regions of Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary into primary targets for regular Russian military provocations. Funding Ukraine’s missile shield is the only reliable method to safeguard NATO and EU eastern borders. Furthermore, it buys irreplaceable time for Europe to fully deploy its own European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).

Currently, the European defence-industrial complex lags significantly in air defence production and requires urgent arsenal replenishment programmes akin to the ASAP (Act in Support of Ammunition Production) initiative. While European factories prepare to spin up new licensed production lines, supplying existing stockpiles of interceptors like the SAMP/T gives the continent the breathing room it desperately needs to scale up its own military manufacturing capacity.

Ultimately, Western governments are acting on a profound public consensus. A striking 76% of Europeans agree that the EU must continue supporting Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved, while 64% of Americans back the continued supply of US weaponry. Bolstering Ukraine’s air defence is not just strategically sound – it is a powerful signal of deterrence and exactly what the democratic public expects.

By Steven Blatter18/06/2026 The ongoing conflict has laid bare a fundamental truth: providing Ukraine with advanced interceptor missiles is not…

[29

post-3717","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-europe
["GET
