By raining down a devastating combination of drones, cruise missiles, and high-speed ballistics like the Iskander-M and Kinzhal, Moscow aims to systematically shatter Ukraine’s infrastructure and wear down civilian morale. Yet, this calculated terror relies entirely on an assumption of impunity – one that advanced Western air defence can completely dismantle.

Breaking the Attrition Machine

When advanced anti-ballistic systems like the Patriot and SAMP/T successfully neutralise Russia’s missile threat, the Kremlin loses its primary tool of asymmetric advantage. Deprived of the ability to cheaply terrorise Ukrainian cities from afar, Moscow faces a bleak prospect: an unsustainably expensive, grinding positional war with zero chance of a decisive breakthrough.

Providing Ukraine with sufficient interceptors is not an escalatory move; it is a purely defensive measure that shifts the conflict into a sphere where Russia can no longer dictate terms. It forces a faltering regime to realise that its grand plans cannot be achieved through brute force alone.

Securing the European Frontier

This is not merely a Ukrainian concern. For nations on NATO’s eastern flank, such as Poland and Romania, stray or non-intercepted Russian ballistics flying over western and southern Ukraine present a clear and present danger.

Cost-effective defence: It is far cheaper and infinitely safer for Europe to neutralise these threats in Ukrainian skies rather than waiting for them to cross allied borders.

Deterrence: Thwarting Russia’s missile capabilities shields European capitals from potential blackmail and demonstrates Western technological superiority. It transforms support for Ukraine into a direct investment in global stability.

Setting the Terms for Real Diplomacy

True diplomacy will only begin when Moscow ceases to have any illusions about a potential military victory. To that end, the “European Trio” – comprising the UK, France, and Germany – alongside Ukraine, have already laid down a unified front. They have outlined five non-negotiable conditions for any future negotiations:

An immediate ceasefire.

The absolute restoration of international borders.

Robust security guarantees for Ukraine.

The freezing of Russian assets until the conflict’s resolution.

Full consideration of broader European security interests.

By investing heavily in Ukraine’s air shields and long-range capabilities, the West can collapse Putin’s terror-based approach. Only when the Kremlin is stripped of its ability to blackmail the world with ballistics will it be forced to abandon its maximalist rhetoric and engage in genuine compromise.

By James Johnson24/06/2026 For over two years, the Kremlin has wagered heavily on a gruelling war of attrition.
